چکیده

Recent Spitzer infrared (IR) observations of two transiting hot Jupiters during their secondary eclipses have provided the first direct detection of planets orbiting other stars (Charbonneau et al. 2005; Deming et al. 2005). We here elaborate on some aspects of our detection of HD209458b at 24 μm, and we compare to the detection of TrES-1 by Charbonneau et al. Spitzer will eventually determine the IR spectral energy distribution of these and similar hot Jupiters, opening the new field of comparative exoplanetology. For now, we have only three Spitzer data points, augmented by upper limits from the ground. We here interpret the available measurements from a purely observational perspective, and we point out that a blackbody spectrum having T ∼ 1100K can account for all current IR measurements, within the errors. This will surely not remain true for long, since ongoing Spitzer observations will be very sensitive to the IR characteristics of hot Jupiters.

On Signatures of Atmospheric Features in Thermal Phase Curves of Hot Jupiters

Turbulence is ubiquitous in Solar System planetary atmospheres. In hot Jupiter atmospheres, the combination of moderately slow rotation and thick pressure scale height may result in dynamical weather structures with unusually large, planetary-size scales. Using equivalent-barotropic, turbulent circulation models, we illustrate how such structures can generate a variety of features in the therma...

Toward Eclipse Mapping of Hot Jupiters

Recent Spitzer infrared measurements of hot Jupiter eclipses suggest that eclipse mapping techniques could be used to spatially resolve the day-side photospheric emission of these planets using partial occultations. As a first step in this direction, we simulate ingress/egress lightcurves for three bright eclipsing hot Jupiters and evaluate the degree to which parameterized photospheric emissio...

Strict Upper Limits on the Carbon-to-oxygen Ratios of Eight Hot Jupiters from Self-consistent Atmospheric Retrieval

The elemental compositions of hot Jupiters are informative relics of planet formation that can help us answer long-standing questions regarding the origin and formation of giant planets. Here, I present the main conclusions from a comprehensive atmospheric retrieval survey of eight hot Jupiters with detectable molecular absorption in their near-infrared transmission spectra. I analyze the eight...

Three-dimensional Atmospheric Circulation of Warm and Hot Jupiters: Effects of Orbital Distance, Rotation Period, and Nonsynchronous Rotation

Efforts to characterize extrasolar giant planet (EGP) atmospheres have so far emphasized planets within 0.05AU of their stars. Despite this focus, known EGPs populate a continuum of orbital separations from canonical hot Jupiter values (0.03–0.05 AU) out to 1 AU and beyond. Unlike typical hot Jupiters, these more distant EGPs will not generally be synchronously rotating. In anticipation of obse...
